Mathematics

ALGEBRA I
(N 169)

Year course-grade 8 Prerequisites for Honors credits: 8th Grade: Raw score of 45 or above on the Survey Test of Algebraic Aptitude, or a score of 35 on the Algebra Readiness Test, or comparable score on equivalent test and/or teacher recommendation and a math GPA of 2.5

ALGEBRA I HONORS
(N 170)

Year course-grades 7-8 Prerequisites: A score of 80% on the MDTP Algebra Readiness Test, or comparable score on equivalent test and/or teacher recommendation and a math GPA of 2.5

Algebra I includes work with the basic properties of real numbers, equations, and inequalities, solution of problems using equations and inequalities, operations with polynomials, graphs, system of linear equations, solving problems by systems of equations, factoring polynomials, solving quadratic equations, inductive and deductive reasoning, and basic probability and statistics.

GEOMETRY HONORS
(N 175)

Year course-grade 8 Prerequisites: Successful completion of Algebra 1 with a C or better.

The geometry skills and concepts developed in this discipline are useful to all students. In addition to learning these skills and concepts, students will develop their ability to construct formal, logical arguments and proofs in geometric settings and problems.

PRE-ALGEBRA 7
(N 158) (N 197 SDAIE)

Students learn to manipulate numbers and equations and understand the general principles at work. They understand and use factoring of numerator and denominators and properties of exponents. They learn the Pythagorean Theorem and solve problems computing the length of an unknown side. Students compute the surface area and volume of basic 3-D objects and understand how they change under a change in scale. Students convert between different units of measurement. They learn to use different representations of fractional numbers (rationals, decimals, and percent. Ratio, proportion and the increase and decrease of simple interest is learned. They graph linear functions and understand the idea of slope and its relation to ratio.

PRE-ALGEBRA 7 HONORS
(N 159)

Year course-grade 7 Prerequisite: Appropriate scores based on multiple measures to include standardized test results, teacher recommendation and grades in previous mathematics courses

Students in Honors Pre-Algebra 7 cover the curriculum in Pre-Algebra 7 but the course is differentiated by pacing and extending problem-solving applications and projects.

PRE-ALGEBRA 8
(N 160) (N 198 SDAIE)

Year course-grade 8 Prerequisite: Pre-Algebra 7

This course is designed to prepare students for a more successful experience in high school Algebra 1. The course is based upon the California Content State Standards. The major objective of the course is to continue students’ conceptual development in the Pre-Algebra content based on the California General Mathematics and Pre-Algebra State Standards.
