ENGLISH LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT -
INTRODUCTION TO CONVERSATIONAL ENGLISH
(Beginning/Early Intermediate)
(L 108–Beginning) (L 138–Intermediate)

One or two year course open to students identified as English language learners in grades 6, 7, and 8. A student may continue this course for a second year if Intermediate fluency is not achieved during the first year. Prerequisites: CELDT score of 1 or 2 and reading level below 2.9. This course is designed to provide students new to English with basic oral and auditory competence in a wide variety of English language settings. Students will develop English receptive and productive skills while they also learn basic elements of the sound system and alphabet. Most course work is centered around helping students to develop English skills that are immediately useful in school, classroom, and community settings.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT -
ENGLISH LANGUAGE STRUCTURE AND VOCABULARY
(Beginning/Early Intermediate; Intermediate)
(L 118–Beginning) (L 148–Intermediate)

One or two year course open to students identified as English language learners in grades 6, 7, and 8. A student may continue this course for a second year if a reading level of 2.9 is not achieved during the first year. Prerequisites: CELDT score of 1, 2, or 3 and reading level below 2.9. This course introduces students to basic English language structure. Students will study basic syntactic elements of English (nouns, verbs, modifiers, etc.) along with phonemic and semantic aspects of the language. A broad base of content area vocabulary related to grade appropriate course work is emphasized in the context of grammar learning tasks and reading/writing assignments. Students study a list of frequently used words to develop spelling accuracy.
